I am finding it difficult to return to the present after my mac's death temporarily exiled me to the Middle Ages. I feel quite lethargic now and don't know where to begin. Probably a case of the plague.

What does "medieval" conjure up for you? Me, the aforementioned plague, religious persecution, more specifically, people being hung upside down and stretched out and poked full of holes and grilled, pointy flats, big staring eyes (score!), Wassail!, those dorky guys Derek and somebody in my speech class who gave a speech about like jousting--in costume, long dragging robes that lace up in a lot of places, and GILDING! Yes! Fain am I to returneth to ye Mocke Golde Leayfe!

Yeah so anyway during my exile I dragged out a bunch of ratty old frames and put faux gold leaf on the worst one.

Here is the frame in progress, it was the reddish one in front.

On the DIY front, I may have mentioned this before, but I have a friend who works for a framer with a gilding department, and he told me those guys don't waste anything, they can't really, because they are using real gold. So there's an art to doing it right, and I am doing it wrong. There's not much you need to know to do it wrong, paint the object to be gilded with size, wait for the size to get sticky, put leaf on it until it's all covered up, and then burnish the hell out of it. It took longer than I expected because I had to do a wasteful two coats to get it even.

I put one of my drawings in it because it happened to fit. This is temporary--there's no glazing and I prefer to have other people's work, not mine, up, because #spendenoughtimeinmyownheadalreadythx, but for now, it's nice to have a change, and it looks pretty good. The right side of the frame looks weird in the picture, but it's just reflection.

I don't know how much a comparable frame would cost, I hope a LOT, because this one took a whole afternoon.

Now I am thinking about putting silver (aluminum) leaf on a kitchen cabinet. Is that a bad idea?

Nicely done with your art frame. Do you have a picture for your kitchen cabinet?
